1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating Harley Boyd Johnson of Rush City, Minnesota, on his 100th
1.3birthday.
1.4WHEREAS, our communities are blessed by the presence of those who have lived long lives
1.5and are part of our living history and having a 100th birthday is a joyous occasion and a time to
1.6honor and congratulate the celebrant; and
1.7WHEREAS, Harley Boyd Johnson was born on April 14, 1920, and joined the United States
1.8Army following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was wounded at Utah Beach, Normandy, France,
1.9in 1944 and served in the 357th Infantry until 1945. Harley was awarded a Purple Heart, European
1.10African Middle Eastern Ribbon with one Battle Star, World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct
1.11Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, and American Theater Ribbon; and
1.12WHEREAS, in addition to his decorated military service, Harley has worn many hats during
1.13his decades in the workforce, including working as a cream grader, a construction worker, an
1.14ammunition maker, and a hospital worker; and
1.15WHEREAS, Harley married his wife, Maydean Lucille Schwarz, on September 25, 1965,
1.16and, while they spent 15 years in Florida, they made their home in Rush City, Minnesota, for most
1.17of their lives and remained happily married until Maydean's passing in 2009. Harley has two
1.18stepsons, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews; and
1.19WHEREAS, Harley is widely known for his kindness, sense of humor, and joyful smile. He
1.20was a loving husband to his wife, and remains a doting stepfather, grandfather, and uncle to his
1.21beloved family; and
1.22NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.23congratulates Harley Boyd Johnson on his 100th birthday and extends its deep gratitude for his
1.24military service.
1.25BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.26enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.27Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Harley Boyd Johnson.
