1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing Harley Swenson on his 100th birthday.
1.3WHEREAS, our communities are enhanced by the presence of those who have lived long
1.4lives and who are part of our living history and having a 100th birthday is a joyous occasion and a
1.5time to honor and congratulate the celebrant; and
1.6WHEREAS, Harley Swenson was born in LaBolt, South Dakota, on December 28, 1919.
1.7He went to high school in Washington, D.C., and graduated in 1937. After high school Harley
1.8joined the Third Armored "Spearhead" Division in the United States Army and received a Purple
1.9Heart for his tank battles on Normandy Beach and in Cologne, Germany. During a 1981 reunion
1.10of the Spearhead Division, Harley was recognized for his service by then-Governor of Arkansas
1.11Bill Clinton; and
1.12WHEREAS, following the war, Harley attended school at Dunwoody Institute and the
1.13University of Minnesota before entering the workforce. Harley has worn many hats in his professional
1.14life, routing mail for the United States Postal Service, driving an ambulance, working in an
1.15optometrist's office, providing security services at Dayton's, caring for his family's farms, and
1.16owning his own business. Harley has also volunteered with a number of organizations, including
1.17the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Shriners; and
1.18WHEREAS, Harley and his wife Gloria have five children, nine grandchildren, and 13
1.19great-grandchildren, and the couple currently resides at McKenna Crossing in Prior Lake. Harley
1.20and Gloria have enjoyed taking motorcycle trips together around the Midwest and in Arkansas;
1.21and
1.22WHEREAS, a celebration of Harley's birthday will be held at the Prior Lake VFW on
1.23December 28, 2019, with family and friends and will include a flag presentation; and
2.1NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.2congratulates Harley Swenson on his 100th birthday.
2.3BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.4enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.5Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Harley Swenson.
