1.1A Senate resolution
1.2commemorating National Speech and Debate Education Day.
1.3WHEREAS, National Speech and Debate Education Day is being celebrated on March 6,
1.42020; and
1.5WHEREAS, established by the National Speech and Debate Association, in conjunction
1.6with national and local partners, this event serves to promote better instruction in speech and debate
1.7across all grade levels and to highlight the pivotal roles these abilities play in personal advocacy,
1.8social movements, and public policy making; and
1.9WHEREAS, speech and debate education helps students develop important skills in
1.10communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration through the practice of public
1.11speaking; participants learn not only to analyze and express complex ideas effectively but also to
1.12listen, concur, ask questions, and dissent with reason and compassion; and
1.13WHEREAS, across the country, countless educators devote in-school, after-school, and
1.14weekend time supporting their students in speech and debate practices and competitions, and the
1.15example of hard work and dedication they set has lasting and positive impact on their pupils; and
1.16WHEREAS, the skills learned through speech and debate serve students well throughout
1.17their lives, and this occasion presents a welcome opportunity to recognize such instruction as an
1.18essential component of a well-rounded curriculum; and
1.19NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.20hereby recognizes March 6, 2020, as National Speech and Debate Education Day in this state.
1.21BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.22enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.23Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the National Speech
1.24and Debate Association.
