1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the life of Camille Gage.
1.3WHEREAS, our communities benefit greatly from the presence of the artists who beautify
1.4the world, challenge the status quo, and inspire further creativity to blossom in others; and
1.5WHEREAS, Camille Gage began to explore her love of the arts in her teenage years, first
1.6writing music and touring with a number of musical acts. Most notably, Camille was a founding
1.7member of Têtes Noires, an all-female rock band with cleverly subversive and overtly feminist
1.8lyrics that helped pave the way for women in the industry. With her five bandmates, Camille toured
1.9for five years, playing at iconic venues including CBGB and First Avenue; and
1.10WHEREAS, Camille's visual art met great renown and often explored the intersection of
1.11the temporal nature of life, the generational bonds of families, and contemporary social issues. She
1.12took her role as a creator seriously and believed that artists have a unique power to manifest a more
1.13compassionate and peaceful world. Her works were displayed locally at the Minneapolis Institute
1.14of Art and the Weisman Art Museum; and
1.15WHEREAS, Camille moved to Minneapolis from Racine, Wisconsin, in 1983 as a single
1.16mother seeking a more vibrant creative environment. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
1.17from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and became a community activist, engaging people
1.18within her community through collaborative poetry and visual art; and
1.19WHEREAS, Camille passed away on December 5, 2022, at the age of 66 after quietly but
1.20determinedly battling cancer over the previous ten months; and
1.21NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.22honors the life of Camille Gage and extends its deepest condolences to all who were fortunate to
1.23know and love her.
1.24BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.25enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.26Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the family of Camille
1.27Gage.
