1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the service of Navy Fireman First Class Neal Kenneth Todd of
1.3Akeley, Minnesota.
1.4WHEREAS, those who serve in the United States armed forces are to be commended for
1.5their heroic service in defense of our country and in the spread of freedom and democracy throughout
1.6the world; and
1.7WHEREAS, the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, while just 90 minutes in
1.8duration, resulted in the deaths of 2,403 Americans, including Navy Fireman First Class Neal
1.9Kenneth Todd of Akeley, Minnesota; and
1.10WHEREAS, F1c Todd was assigned to the USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford
1.11Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The ship sustained multiple
1.12torpedo hits and quickly capsized, killing 429 crewman on board. F1c Todd was among the casualties
1.13and was initially reported as missing in action before ultimately being declared dead; and
1.14WHEREAS, nearly 80 years following the death of F1c Todd, his remains will be returned
1.15to his family for burial on July 10, 2021, after being identified through anthropological analysis by
1.16the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on February 11, 2021; and
1.17WHEREAS, while the honorable loss of F1c Todd's life is a debt that cannot be repaid, his
1.18family has a proud history of patriotism and military service. Seven of F1c Todd's siblings served
1.19in the military, including four of his brothers in World War II, one of whom survived the attack on
1.20the USS Oklahoma; and
1.21WHEREAS, F1c Todd will be laid to rest in Akeley, with full military honors, next to his
1.22brother, Alfred Staffenhagen, Jr., and near the final resting place of his parents; and
1.23NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.24extends deepest gratitude to the family of Neal Kenneth Todd for his dedicated service to his
1.25community, the state of Minnesota, and our nation.
1.26BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.27enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.28Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the family of Neal
1.29Kenneth Todd.
