A House resolution
condemning Chinese treatment of and human rights violations against the Uyghurs.

WHEREAS, there are about 12 million Uyghurs, mostly practicing Muslims, who live in the
Xinjiang region in northwestern China; and

WHEREAS, as an ethnic and religious minority group, the Uyghurs have faced increasing
surveillance and cultural suppression by the Chinese government, including mandatory government
facial recognition and cell phone checkpoints, installation of cameras in private homes and mosques,
and imprisonment for teaching the Uyghur language; and

WHEREAS, as many as one million Uyghurs have been detained in "re-education" and forced
work camps while birthrates among the Uyghurs has plummeted, consistent with reports of forced
contraception and sterilization in these camps; and

WHEREAS, the United States, the leader of the free world, cannot turn a blind eye to the
atrocities happening across the globe and sanctioned Chinese regional officials and a security agency
in July of 2020 for their roles in the detentions of the Uyghurs; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the State of Minnesota that it condemns
the actions of the Chinese government against the Uyghurs.
