1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to public safety; creating the crime of electronic impersonation; imposing
1.3penalties;proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 609.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.5    Section 1. [609.7482] ELECTRONIC IMPERSONATION.
1.6(a) A person who knowingly and without consent and with intent to cause
1.7harassment as defined in section 609.748, subdivision 1, paragraph (a), clause (1), credibly
1.8represents oneself as another actual person through or on a Web site or by other electronic
1.9means is guilty of a felony.
1.10(b) For the purposes of this section, a person credibly represents oneself as another
1.11person if another person would reasonably believe, or did reasonably believe, that the
1.12defendant was or is the person who was impersonated.
1.13EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective August 1, 2015, and applies to crimes
1.14committed on or after that date.
