Senators McMorrow, Chang, Moss, Hertel, Ananich, Polehanki, Geiss, Bayer, Brinks, McCann, Irwin, Hollier, Wojno, Alexander, Santana and Bullock offered the following resolution:
Senate Resolution No. 5.
A resolution to urge the Congress and President of the United States to end the partial federal government shutdown.
Whereas, The President and Congress failed to agree on sufficient appropriations for Fiscal Year 2019 beyond December 21, 2018, leading to a partial federal government shutdown beginning on December 22, 2018; and
Whereas, Almost 400,000 federal employees have been furloughed as a result of the shutdown, while more than 400,000 others are working without pay. In Michigan, more than 5,200 federal workers are currently furloughed or working without pay. Missed paychecks and uncertainty about when the next one will come place an enormous strain on federal employees who we count on to provide important services and administer critical programs. Creating financial insecurity for these public servants is deeply unfair and harms our state and national interest; and
Whereas, With a limited number of federal employees authorized to work during the shutdown, many important programs, public services, and offices are closed or working at diminished capacity. The shutdown has already impacted park maintenance, food safety inspections, air travel, small business loans, federal correctional facilities, museums, research, and a host of other functions. If the shutdown continues, assistance programs, tax return processing, housing programs, and court operations will be impacted; and
Whereas, The health of the entire economy is threatened by an extended shutdown. The ongoing government shutdown has cost the economy $3.6 billion. For each additional week where the government remains shut down, experts say that it could cost the U.S. economy $1.2 billion of real gross domestic product; and
Whereas; Reaching agreement to resolve the budget impasse is essential for the safety and well-being of federal employees in Michigan and the people of the entire country. The current shutdown, already the longest in American history, must be ended before its impacts become even more severe; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That we urge the Congress and President of the United States to end the partial federal government shutdown; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
