SENATE BILL NO. 1092

June 23, 2022, Introduced by Senators BRINKS, BAYER, POLEHANKI, WOJNO, GEISS, MCMORROW, SANTANA, MOSS, MCCANN, CHANG, HERTEL and IRWIN and referred to the Committee on Education and Career Readiness.

A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

"The revised school code,"

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1232.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 1232. (1) The department shall create and administer the student teacher grant program to provide grants to school districts, intermediate school districts, and public school academies for the reimbursement of costs as provided in this section.

(2) To receive a grant through the grant program, a school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy must apply for the grant in a form and manner prescribed by the department.

(3) The department shall pay each school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy that applies for a grant through the grant program an amount not to exceed $10,000.00.

(4) The grant funding under this section must be used by a recipient school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy only to reimburse for the cost of child care and other costs, as determined by the school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy, accrued by an eligible student teacher of a school operated by the school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy.

(5) As used in this section:

(a) "Eligible student teacher" means an individual who is serving as a student teacher for the school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy.

(b) "Grant program" means the student teacher grant program created under subsection (1).
