A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding sections 1290 and 1503.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1290. Not later than August 1, 2012, the board of each
school district or board of directors of a public school academy
that offers interscholastic or other competitive athletic programs
shall develop guidelines and other pertinent information to inform
and educate coaches, student athletes, and parents or guardians
about the nature and risk of concussion and head injury, including
the risks of continuing to participate in an athletic activity
after concussion or head injury. A board or board of directors may
base the guidelines and information on protocols, policies, or
information developed by a statewide interscholastic athletic
association.
Sec. 1503. Not later than the beginning of the 2012-2013
school year, the board of a school district or board of directors
of a public school academy shall adopt and implement a wellness
policy to promote healthy habits among its pupils, including at
least proper nutrition and physical activity.
