A bill to require the reporting of credible threats against
public and nonpublic schools.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1. (1) An individual required to report child abuse or
child neglect under section 3 of the child protection law, 1975 PA
238, MCL 722.623, is also required to report when he or she learns
of a credible threat against a public school or nonpublic school.
The report must be made immediately to a law enforcement agency.
(2) As used in this section:
(a) "Credible threat" means a verbal or nonverbal threat, or a
combination of the 2, including a threat delivered by electronic
communication, that places the individual or group of individuals
who are the target of the threat in reasonable fear for his or her
safety, the safety of the group, or the safety of others, which
threat is made with the apparent ability to carry out the threat to
cause that harm.
(b) "Nonpublic school" and "public school" mean those terms as
defined in section 5 of the revised school code, 1976 PA 451, MCL
380.5.
Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days
after the date it is enacted into law.
