A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1293.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1293. (1) Not later than November 1, 2019, the department
shall develop or adopt, and make available to schools, appropriate
school climate surveys for each of the following groups:
(a) Pupils in grades 3 to 5.
(b) Pupils in grades 6 to 8.
(c) Pupils in grades 9 to 12.
(d) Teachers and school staff.
(e) Parents of pupils.
(f) Community members.
(2) The school climate surveys developed or adopted under
subsection (1) must be designed to provide schools with formative
and summative school climate data for use in needs assessments,
program development, and short- and long-term planning, and must
measure at least all of the following:
(a) Social and emotional learning.
(b) Pupil support.
(c) High expectations and academic rigor and challenge.
(d) Safe and respectful school climate.
(3) A school district, intermediate school district, or public
school academy may administer 1 or more of the school climate
surveys developed or adopted under subsection (1). A school
district, intermediate school district, or public school academy
that administers a school climate survey under this subsection
shall maintain the results on a secure website and shall not share
the results with the department. The results of a school climate
survey administered under this subsection are the sole property of
the school district, intermediate school district, or public school
academy that administered the survey.
Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days
after the date it is enacted into law.
