A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

"The revised school code,"

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1138a.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 1138a. (1) Notwithstanding any provision of this act to the contrary, if a public school pupil enrolled in grades 6 to 12 is absent from school for up to 1 full school day because the pupil is sounding "Taps" at a military honors funeral held in this state for a deceased veteran, the school officials of the public school shall consider that absence to be an excused absence. Notwithstanding any provision of this act to the contrary, the board of a school district or intermediate school district or board of directors of a public school academy shall ensure that its attendance policy is consistent with this section.

(2) As used in this section, "veteran" means that term as defined in section 1 of 1965 PA 190, MCL 35.61.

Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days after the date it is enacted into law.
