SENATE RESOLUTION


     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION memorializing Russell "Ben" Hersberger.

    Whereas, Russell "Ben" Hersberger was born on March 31, 1929 in Lapel, Indiana;

    Whereas, Ben was the son of Guy and Ressie Hersberger;

    Whereas, Ben graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1947, where he was the senior class president and valedictorian, and later attended Muncie Business College;

    Whereas, Ben joined the United States Army and served as a combat infantryman for Company F of the 23rd regiment in the Korean War. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his courageous service after being wounded in the line of duty;

    Whereas, After being discharged from the Army, Ben worked for Allen Chevrolet in Cambridge City. He then became an insurance agent for Bogue Insurance Agency, which he later purchased, and retired in 1989;

    Whereas, Ben was happily married to his wife Patty for

sixty years, and together they have three children, Jim, Julie, and Emily;

    Whereas, Ben was a devoted member of his community, serving on the Wayne County Council for 25 years. He was also a former member of the Golay Center Board and the Cambridge City Public Library Board, and an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Cambridge City;

    Whereas, Ben was very supportive of Western Wayne Schools, both in athletics and academics, serving as a timekeeper for Lincoln High School football and basketball games for over 25 years, a mentor to Lincoln High School students, and a moderator of the Lincoln High School Veterans Day;

    Whereas, Ben passed away on December 19, 2012; and

    Whereas, Ben's dedication to his community, his family, and his friends will not be forgotten: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:



    SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate honors the life of Russell "Ben" Hersberger.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the family of Russell "Ben" Hersberger.
