SENATE RESOLUTION


     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION recognizing the 100th year of the Boy Scouts' Eagle Award.

    Whereas, The Boy Scouts recently celebrated their 102nd anniversary. Since 1910, more than 110 million Americans have been a part of the Scouts organization;

    Whereas, The first Eagle Scout Award was earned by Arthur Rose Eldred, at the age of 17, on August 21, 1912. About 2.1 million Scouts have earned the rank of Eagle Scout, 51, 473 of which earned awards last year;

    Whereas, The Eagle Scout Award is the highest rank that can be obtained in the scouting program. This honor is obtained by serving in the rank of Life Scout for at least six months, earning 21 merit badges, living by the principles of the Scout Oath and Law, and lending leadership in a service project assisting a religious organization, school, or local community;

    Whereas, The Boy Scouts organization helps many young adults develop a sense of integrity, honor, and responsibility, in addition to teaching practical life skills such as CPR, PADI

scuba certification, land navigation, and wilderness survival. The Boy Scouts have boasted notable alumni including: Astronaut Neil Armstrong, President Gerald Ford, Senator Richard Lugar, TV Host Mike Rowe, and Movie Producer Steven Spielberg; and

    Whereas, The Boy Scouts of America is a reputable organization and their Eagle Scout Award is a high honor: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate recognizes the Boy Scouts of America's 100th year anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award.
    SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Calumet Council of Boy Scouts and T. Edward Page.
