MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION memorializing Henry Karlson.
Whereas, Henry Carl Karlson II was born on August 17,
1943 in Evanston, Illinois to Ruby and Henry C. Karlson;
Whereas, Henry graduated from Evanston High School in
1961. He went on to attend the University of Illinois where he
earned a bachelors degree magna cum laude in 1965, a juris
doctorate in 1968, and an L.L.M in 1977;
Whereas, Henry joined the United States Army Jag School
in 1968 and went on active duty as a Trial Court Judge in
Vietnam. Henry served 8 years in the JAG Corps as a defense
attorney, trial counsel, and trial judge;
Whereas, He later returned to the University of Illinois to student teach and earn his L.L.M. In 1977, he began teaching as a law professor at Robert H. McKinney School of Law, formerly Indiana University Law School of Indianapolis. He taught criminal law, evidence, trial practice, and a seminar dealing with child abuse. He is remembered at the law school for his interaction with the students as he often engaged the students in lively debates, challenging them to view issues from
different points of view;
Whereas, Professor Karlson co-authored a book on child
abuse, and many of his articles on the topic have appeared in
the APSAC Handbook on Child Maltreatment, the Indiana Law
Review, the Journal of Child Abuse and Neglect, the Annals of
Emergency Medicine, and the Defense Law Journal;
Whereas, Professor Karlson presented over one hundred
continuing legal education programs to judges and attorneys
throughout Indiana. He was qualified as an expert witness on
proper methods for questioning very young children, and on the
issue of lawyer competency. He was a member of the
Association of Counsel for Children, American Professional
Society on the Abuse of Children, Association of Trial Lawyers
of America, Order of the Coif, Indiana Supreme Court
Committee on Rules of Evidence, and Board of Examiners of
the National Board of Trial Advocacy;
Whereas, Professor Karlson passed away on October 25,
2010. He was a beloved husband to his wife, Nancy Karlson,
for 42 years, and a devoted father to their children, Elizabeth
and Henry; and
Whereas, Professor Karlson was highly regarded in the
legal profession. He was a powerful advocate and dedicated
person. He held high principles and introduced others to those
standards. He constantly provided for the less fortunate,
especially children. His dedication to his family, teachings,
and beliefs made him a remarkable leader who will be missed
by many: Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate memorializes the life of Henry C. Karlson II.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit a copy of this Resolution to Nancy Karlson, Liz Karlson, and Gary Roberts.
