SENATE RESOLUTION



MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

        A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring James Sperlik on the occasion of his retirement from the Legislative Services Agency.

    Whereas, James Sperlik retired in December 2010, from the Legislative Services Agency, where he served for 39 years;

    Whereas, Before coming to the Legislative Services Agency (LSA), Jim worked for two years at Ivy Tech Community College, bringing to 41 years the total length of his service to the state of Indiana and its citizens;

    Whereas, Jim has contributed many years of outstanding service to the members of the Indiana General Assembly and the people of Indiana by staffing the State Budget Committee and annually publishing the Indiana Pension Handbook, first published in 1990;

    Whereas, During his career at LSA, Jim worked on issues dealing with pensions, transportation, motor fuel taxation, corrections, natural resources, and the sunset evaluation of transportation;

    Whereas, Promoted to the position of Senior Budget Analyst in June 1980, Jim was recognized for his work with staff orientation and development as team leader and training officer and continued leading by example in whatever capacity he was asked, including coordinating

multiple renovations of the LSA office space;

    Whereas, Jim's contributions to the work product of the Indiana General Assembly were numerous and substantial;

    Whereas, Jim always exemplified professionalism and dedication in his work at LSA and service to the General Assembly and was always willing to assist his colleagues and ready to respond to a legislative request in the most expedited manner;

    Whereas, Always a giving person, Jim's actions at the State House reflected the concern and compassion he felt for everyone;

    Whereas, He began devoting his time and efforts helping mankind in 1965 as a VISTA volunteer, grade school teacher, and nonprofit service provider serving in Appalachia, Floyd County, Kentucky;

    Whereas, Jim continues serving his fellow Hoosiers as a volunteer at the St. Maria Goretti food pantry;

    Whereas, Jim's giving attitude also touched the lives of his co-workers when he offered transportation in his spacious truck on snowy days, procured a wheelchair for a co-worker's use in the building, and delivered Christmas gifts to the office's adopted family;

    Whereas, Jim was an Andy Frain usher at Chicago sports venues, including Wrigley Field, the home of his beloved Chicago Cubs;

    Whereas, An avid runner and fitness fanatic who participated in the Boston Marathon in 1996, Jim maintained his good shape by walking the halls of the State House twice as fast as anyone else;

    Whereas, Jim graduated from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration Accounting, and did graduate work at Indiana University;


    Whereas, Jim is a loving husband to Patricia, dedicated father to Leslie and Kirsten, and a doting grandfather of Nicolas, Teagan, and Nina; and

    Whereas, Even though Jim will be enjoying his retirement, he will always remain in the hearts and minds of Indiana legislators and his colleagues as an honorable and caring human being: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate congratulates James Sperlik on the occasion of his retirement and thanks him for his years of dedicated service to the state of Indiana.
    SECTION 2. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to James Sperlik and his family.
