SENATE RESOLUTION

MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the legislative council to establish an interim study committee to study Common Core State Standards.

    Whereas, The Common Core State Standards are uniform education standards developed by the states;

    Whereas, Indiana currently has nationally and internationally recognized rigorous educational standards;

    Whereas, It is the desire of Indiana to set and maintain rigorous standards for Indiana's students, and any new standards must represent the level of rigor Indiana's students will need to succeed in the 21st Century;

    Whereas, Questions have been raised about the rigors of Common Core State Standards compared with the current Indiana education standards, and further study should examine the implementation of currently adopted Common Core State Standards and the appropriateness of adopting future Common Core State Standards in Indiana; and

    Whereas, The committee, if established, should examine how the Common Core State Standards relate to Indiana's current standards, ensuring that the Common Core State Standards are at least as rigorous as Indiana's nationally recognized standards, and examine the impact, if any, of national standards to locally developed education standards:

Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the legislative council is urged to establish an interim study committee to study the value of adopting Common Core State Standards.
    SECTION 2. That the committee, if established, shall operate under the direction of the legislative council, and that the committee shall issue a final report when directed to do so by the council.
