Bulldogs Men's Basketball Team on a historic 2009-2010
season.

A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating the Butler Bulldogs Men's Basketball Team on a historic 2009-2010 season.
Whereas,
Under the leadership of Coach Brad Stevens,
the Butler Bulldogs men's basketball team concluded an
exceptional and historic 2009-2010 basketball season
playing in the NCAA national championship title game;
Whereas,
Butler played a phenomenal season amassing
26 wins and only 4 losses, while remaining undefeated
playing at home at Hinkle Fieldhouse;
Whereas,
Butler carried the success of the regular season
into the Horizon League Tournament, claiming the Horizon
League Championship and becoming the first team in
Horizon League history to complete an unbeaten league
season and clinch the league tournament. The 2010
Championship marks Butler's record-setting 6
th
tournament
victory;
Whereas,
In their 10
th
appearance in the NCAA
tournament, Butler earned their way into the "Sweet Sixteen"
by defeating the University of Texas _ El Paso 77-59 in the
first round and Murray State 54-52 in the second round;
Whereas, In the "Sweet Sixteen" round, Butler pushed past Syracuse by a score of 63 to 59, clinching the team's 24 th
straight victory, and earning Butler its first-ever trip to the
"Elite Eight where the team faced Kansas State. Stout
defensive play and dynamic shooting led Butler to a victory
over Kansas State, 63-56;
Whereas,
The Bulldogs, who became the first team to
play a final four game in their hometown since 1972, faced
a strong opponent in Michigan State. In a tight game where
neither team led by more than seven points, the Bulldogs
outlasted the Spartans for a chance at the NCAA
championship title;
Whereas,
By earning a place in the championship game,
the team also earned a place in history. Butler became the
smallest school to play for a national championship since
1985, when the tournament expanded to 64 teams;
Whereas,
Butler played Duke in what the New York
Times called the most eagerly awaited championship game
in years. In the well-fought match, the Bulldogs were dealt
their only loss of the tournament; and
Whereas,
As there is a rich tradition of basketball in the
state of Indiana
, Butler's historic season will not soon be
forgotten
. Butler's season was inspirational not only to
Hoosiers, but the entire nation: Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate congratulates the Butler
University men's basketball team for their phenomenal season.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit a copy of this Resolution to Butler University President Bobby
Fong, Athletic Director Barry Collier, and Coach Brad Stevens.
