SENATE RESOLUTION

     A SENATE RESOLUTION congratulating the Butler Bulldogs Men's Basketball Team on a historic 2009-2010 season.

    Whereas, Under the leadership of Coach Brad Stevens, the Butler Bulldogs men's basketball team concluded an exceptional and historic 2009-2010 basketball season playing in the NCAA national championship title game;

    Whereas, Butler played a phenomenal season amassing 26 wins and only 4 losses, while remaining undefeated playing at home at Hinkle Fieldhouse;

    Whereas, Butler carried the success of the regular season into the Horizon League Tournament, claiming the Horizon League Championship and becoming the first team in Horizon League history to complete an unbeaten league season and clinch the league tournament. The 2010 Championship marks Butler's record-setting 6 th tournament victory;

    Whereas, In their 10 th appearance in the NCAA tournament, Butler earned their way into the "Sweet Sixteen" by defeating the University of Texas _ El Paso 77-59 in the first round and Murray State 54-52 in the second round;

    Whereas, In the "Sweet Sixteen" round, Butler pushed past Syracuse by a score of 63 to 59, clinching the team's 24 th

straight victory, and earning Butler its first-ever trip to the "Elite Eight” where the team faced Kansas State. Stout defensive play and dynamic shooting led Butler to a victory over Kansas State, 63-56;

    Whereas, The Bulldogs, who became the first team to play a final four game in their hometown since 1972, faced a strong opponent in Michigan State. In a tight game where neither team led by more than seven points, the Bulldogs outlasted the Spartans for a chance at the NCAA championship title;

    Whereas, By earning a place in the championship game, the team also earned a place in history. Butler became the smallest school to play for a national championship since 1985, when the tournament expanded to 64 teams;

    Whereas, Butler played Duke in what the New York Times called “the most eagerly awaited championship game in years.” In the well-fought match, the Bulldogs were dealt their only loss of the tournament; and

    Whereas, As there is a rich tradition of basketball in the state of Indiana , Butler's historic season will not soon be forgotten . Butler's season was inspirational not only to Hoosiers, but the entire nation: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate congratulates the Butler University men's basketball team for their phenomenal season.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Butler University President Bobby Fong, Athletic Director Barry Collier, and Coach Brad Stevens.
