SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION No. _____

    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing philanthropist and entrepreneur Bill Cook, for his service to the citizens of Indiana.

    Whereas, Bill Cook was a Bloomington industrialist and philanthropist who died at the age of 80. He was an example of a self-made success story who kept business personal and valued doing good to others over seeming great;

    Whereas, Cook Group, Inc., created in 1963 in the spare bedroom of his Bloomington apartment, on a $1,500 investment, started with his invention of a heart catheterization instrument. Cook Group has thrived through hard times, growing to 42 companies, globally employing more than 10,000 people. Bill Cook's leadership allowed the company to fill the most basic human needs, and maintain loyalty between management and staff;

    Whereas, The wealthiest man in Indiana invested $35 million into the West Baden-French Lick community and boosted it out of economic depression. He also donated $10 million of the $13 million cost of transforming the Old Centrum in Indianapolis into the new home of Indiana Landmarks;

    Whereas, With his wife Gayle, Bill saved century-old buildings and spent tens of millions on the Star of Indiana drum and bugle corps, a teaching venture for teenagers that

developed into a Tony Award-winning Broadway show. He also founded the Monroe County YMCA. Bill Cook contributed to buildings and programs at Indiana University, Northwestern University, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. His contributions ranged from medicine, to music, to sports;

    Whereas, The William and Gayle Cook Music Library is internationally known as one of the largest academic music libraries in the world. Beyond the size and quality of the collections, it has a reputation for providing excellent services and leading the way in the development of technological advancements in music libraries;

    Whereas, Gifts through the years from the Cooks to the IU Jacobs School of Music include the Ray E. Cramer Graduate Scholarship Fund, as well as a lead gift for the Cook Band Building Fund, which will be used for the construction of a new Marching Hundred Hall;

    Whereas, Governor Daniels was to honor Bill Cook with Indiana's highest honor, a Sachem award, later this year; and

    Whereas, Carl Cook will succeed his father as CEO of Cook Group, Inc.; therefore:

Be it resolved by the Senate     of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives     concurring:

SECTION 1. That the Senate of Indiana General Assembly does hereby memorialize Bill Cook for his service and devotion to the citizens of Indiana.
SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate shall transmit copies of this resolution to Gayle Cook.
