A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating the Indianapolis
Children's Choir on their 25th anniversary.
Whereas, The Indianapolis Children's Choir has been a
consistent source of high quality music and artistic
excellence for a quarter century;
Whereas, Henry Leck founded the Indianapolis
Children's Choir in 1986 as a place for young people to
learn, grow, and excel in developing their musical skills and
understanding through quality instruction and experiences;
Whereas, Meeting on the campus of Butler University,
the Indianapolis Children's Choir is comprised of over 2,500
children from 19 counties, including every Indianapolis area
suburb and nearby rural community. This diverse cross-
section of central Indiana, includes children from over 352
schools, including 48 parochial schools, 14 private schools,
5 charter schools, and more than 73 home schools;
Whereas, The Indianapolis Children's Choir's 25th
concert season includes nine captivating concerts,
highlighted by Angels Sing, Voices of Youth, and the 25th
Anniversary Gala concert;
Whereas, Angels Sing is the annual holiday celebration concert held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. The
concert features traditional Christmas songs as well as tunes
from a variety of cultures, joined by a live brass quintet,
exquisite organ playing and piano accompaniment by a
variety of talented artists. The 2009 Angels Sing concert
included the participation of Indianapolis recording artist
Angela Brown;
Whereas, Voices of Youth is the annual downtown
concert held at Hilbert Circle Theatre. This year's
performance on March 6th was a celebration of jazz. The
Indianapolis Children's Choir performed with Sarah
Scharbrough, an Indianapolis Children's Choir alum and
accomplished musician;
Whereas, The 25th Anniversary Gala concert will be held
on May 7, 2011 at Clowes Memorial Hall on the campus of
Butler University. This momentous occasion will be the first
time that all choirs in the Indianapolis Children's Choir
organization will be on one stage together. This concert is
a celebration of the 25 tremendous years of the Indianapolis
Children's Choir. It will undoubtedly be a powerful and
moving homage to children's choral music;
Whereas, The Indianapolis Children's Choir had the
distinction of performing for a myriad of national
professional music associations, including the American
Choral Directors Association, Music Educators' National
Conference, Organization of Kodaly Educators, American
Orff-Schulwerk Association, Collegiate Music Society, and
National Music Librarians;
Whereas, The Indianapolis Children's Choir regularly appears with orchestras, professional artists, and ensembles of the highest caliber, including numerous concerts with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. They have also appeared on stage with the Canadian Brass, the Chieftains, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Carmel Symphony, Dance Kaleidoscope, Indianapolis Opera, Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Columbus
Indiana Philharmonic, Celine Dion, Judy Collins, Denyse
Graves, Sylvia McNair, and Sandi Patty. In addition, they
have performed with Indianapolis native and world
renowned opera singer Angela Brown, with whom they
released an album;
Whereas, The Indianapolis Children's Choir sang for
Indiana gubernatorial inaugurations, Governor's Arts
Awards, Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, Indiana
Leadership Summit, Tenth Pan Am Games, Presidential
visits, Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication,
the inaugural Indianapolis Prize, closing ceremonies of the
International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and much
more;
Whereas, In 2003, the Indianapolis Children's Choir
performed the Trio of Minuet, Indianapolis' first professional
children's opera. They continued working with the
Indianapolis Opera in the 2008 production of Hansel and
Gretel, and the 2009 production of La Boheme;
Whereas, In 2010, the Indianapolis Children's Choir
performed at the grand opening of "The Indiana Experience"
at the Indiana History Center, and sang the national anthem
in celebration of Kids Day for the Indiana Pacers;
Whereas, Perhaps the most iconic performance thus far
by the Indianapolis Children's Choir was at the 2004 FINA
World Swimming Championships, where the choir sang the
national anthems for all of the award ceremonies. Their
watershed performance subsequently opened the door to
nationally televised performances at the NCAA Women's
Final Four Championship Game, US Grand Prix/Formula
One, and the international Solheim Cup tournament;
Whereas, The Indianapolis Children's Choir is led by a cadre of outstanding conductors, including Henry Leck, founder and artistic director of the Indianapolis Children's Choir, and conductor of the Bel Canto and Cantantes Angeli
Choirs. Other conductors include Ruth Dwyer, the director
of education, associate director, conductor of the Chamber,
Lyric, and Kantorei Choirs, and conductor of the Columbus
Indiana Children's Choir (CICC) Concert Choir;
Camilla
Gehring, assistant director of the CICC, and conductor of the
CICC Descant Choir;
Sarah Hassler, associate director and
conductor of the Octavo and Treble Choirs;
Joshua Pedde,
the assistant artistic director, and conductor of the Bel Canto
and Cantantes Angeli Choirs;
Lauren Southard, director of
the St. Vincent Unity Development Center Choir; and
Cheryl
West, associate director and conductor of the Indianapolis
Youth Chorale;
Whereas, The Indianapolis Children's Choir also has
several outstanding regional choir conductors, including
Leslie Carter, regional director and conductor of the Carmel
Choir;
Mary Rinck Evers, regional director and conductor of
the Greenfield Choir;
Andrew M. Himelick, regional director
and conductor of the Zionsville Choir;
Cindy Johnson,
regional director and conductor of the Fishers Choir;
Jennie
Poe Kistner, regional director and conductor of the Lebanon
Choir;
Erin Quandt, regional director and conductor of the
Eastside Choir;
Erin Slavens, regional director and
conductor of the Avon Choir; Monika Spangler, regional
director and conductor of the Fishers Choir;
and Robyn Ton,
regional director and conductor of the Center Grove Choir;
and
Whereas, The Indianapolis Children's Choir's 25th
anniversary is a momentous occasion sure to be filled with
outstanding music: Therefore,
of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives concurring:
SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly congratulates the
Indianapolis Children's Choir on their 25th anniversary.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit a copy of this Resolution to Henry Leck, founder and artistic director of the Indianapolis Children's Choir; the directors of the auditioned choirs, Leslie Carter, Ruth Dwyer, Mary Rinck Evers, Camilla Gehring, Sarah Hassler, Andrew M. Himelick, Cindy Johnson, Jennie Poe Kistner, Joshua Pedde, Erin Quandt, Erin Slavens, Lauren Southard, Monika Spangler, Robyn Ton, Cheryl West; and the Indianapolis Children's Choir's Board of Directors, Brad Arthur, President; Jeff Mortier, Executive Vice President; Linda Wallace, Treasurer; William Batt, Associate Treasurer; Maria Fletcher, Secretary of the Board; Eric Moy, Executive Committee; Matt Carter, Joe Gonzalez, Toni Kanzler, Bobbi Lovenheim, Robert Lubitz, Jo Ann Lynch, Haley Moore, Judy Roudebush, Michael Sells, Greg Sinise, Don Steffy, Ken Roberts, Kate Vaulter, and Timothy J.
