    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring John C. Schalliol on his retirement as director of the South Bend Airport following 51 years of dedicated service in the field of aviation.

    Whereas, After four years of service in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineering Corps , Purdue University graduate, John C. Schalliol, began his aviation career as an engineer in the Airport Design Section of Clyde E. Williams & Associates, Inc.;

    Whereas, Mr. Schalliol began his tenure with the St. Joseph County Airport Authority in 1977 as the Airport Engineer, and subsequently rose to Executive Director in 1981. John Schalliol was successful in directing numerous capital improvements and securing substantial land acquisitions, valued at over $85 million and $20 million, respectively;

    Whereas, This commitment to growth and development attracted various airlines, a bus service, and the South Shore Railroad, expanding the operation to a multi-modal regional transportation hub;

    Whereas, Due to his exceptional leadership in his 8 years as a Board Member of the American Association of Airport Executives, John was named the honored recipient of the Distinguished Service Award in 2000. He also served in the capacity of President of the AAAE Great Lakes Chapter, and President of the Aviation Association of Indiana, where he was awarded "Man of the Year" in 1984. Furthermore, John C.

Schalliol currently sits on a project panel, a part of the Aviation Cooperative Research Program as operated under the National Transportation Research Board;

    Whereas, Previously John C. Schalliol served on the Board of Project Future. Currently, he acts as President of the Industrial Foundation of South Bend, is a member of the St. Joseph County Hotel-Motel Tax Board, and was the Ideal Baldoni Distinguished Service Award recipient in 2006;

    Whereas, John C. Schalliol also remains an active alumnus of Purdue University, serving on the Advisory Committee for the School of Aviation Technology, and was named a "Distinguished Alumni" in 1994;

    Whereas, A clear commitment to public service was shown in John's role as Transportation Chairman for the 1987 International Summer Special Olympics, which was held in South Bend; and

    Whereas, John. C. Schalliol has provided outstanding leadership and passion in the field aviation, translating that into decades of growth and improvements, which have left a permanent imprint on the South Bend Airport that will be felt for years to come: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate
of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives     concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate congratulates John C. Schalliol on his retirement after 31 years of service to the South Bend Airport, along with his numerous career accomplishments in the field of aviation.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to John C. Schalliol and to the chairman of the St. Joseph County Airport Authority.
