A HOUSE RESOLUTION to honoring Attorney James H.
Voyles upon his receipt of the Paul H. Buchanan Award for
Excellence from the Indianapolis Bar Association.
Whereas, the Indianapolis Bar Association was founded in
1878 and consists of more than 5000 members; and,
Whereas, one of its most distinguished members is James
H. Voyles, who has been practicing law in Indianapolis and is
renowned throughout the State of Indiana and far beyond for his
expertise in the defense of persons charged with crimes; and,
Whereas, Mr. Voyles has been practicing criminal defense
for more that 40 years, having been admitted to the Bar of the
Indiana Supreme Court in 1968; and,
Whereas, Mr. Voyles has also been admitted to the Bars of the United States Courts of Appeals for the Seventh and Eleventh Circuits; the Federal District Courts of several States;
and the United States Supreme Court; and,
Whereas, Mr. Voyles has also tried significant criminal
cases in the States of Illinois, Florida, Colorado, Montana,
Pennsylvania, Nevada, New Jersey and Wisconsin; and,
Whereas, Mr. Voyles has been involved in numerous
high-profile cases throughout his career; and,
Whereas, Mr. Voyles is a frequent speaker and teacher at
numerous continuing legal education seminars throughout
Indiana and elsewhere; and,
Whereas, Mr. Voyles is a leading member of the National
Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, where he was first
elected to membership in 1976; and,
Whereas, Mr. Voyles was elected a Fellow of the American
College of Trial Lawyers in 1991, and has been named as one
of the Best Lawyers in America annually since 1985; and,
Whereas, the membership of the Indianapolis Bar
Association has recognized the outstanding leadership abilities
of Mr. Voyles and voted him its 134th President where he
served with distinction for 2009; and,
Whereas, in recognition of his unparalleled achievements
in the field of criminal defense law, as well as his outstanding
leadership and contributions to the betterment of the practice of
law not only in Indianapolis but throughout the State of Indiana,
the Indianapolis Bar Association voted to bestow the Paul H.
Buchanan Award for Excellence, its highest honor, upon Mr.
Voyles on February 17, 2011; and,
Whereas, the Buchanan Award is not an annual award, but is only given from time to time as is determined to be appropriate to a member of the Bar Association whose attainments as a lawyer have been notable, whose contributions to the Association have been unique, and whose honorable service to the profession have extended over a significant period of time; and that the award is given to reward such
accomplishments and to inspire others to such service; and,
Whereas, Mr. Voyles exemplifies the greatest and most
noble characteristics of the legal profession and is most
certainly deserving of this outstanding award: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates
James H. Voyles upon his receipt of the Paul H. Buchanan Award for
Excellence from the Indianapolis Bar Association and wishes him
continued success in his future endeavors.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to James H. Voyles
and his family.
