    A HOUSE RESOLUTION to honor Arsenal Technical High School on its 100th anniversary.

    Whereas, Arsenal Technical High School began classes on September 12th, 1912;

    Whereas, The beautiful campus that is now ATHS is located on land that has rich historic significance, a Civil War facility, the U.S. Arsenal, in 1861, later leased by the federal government to Indianapolis Public Schools for $1.00 per year on the condition that the 78-acre site always be used for educational purposes;
    
    Whereas, The U.S. Arsenal was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 in co-operation with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources;



    Whereas, Tech High School, blessed with visionary leaders, dedicated and talented faculty and support staff, has enriched our community, state and nation with over 60,000 graduates from diverse backgrounds, who have excelled in the arts and sciences, skilled trades, public and military service, as well as business and civic engagement;

    Whereas, From its beginning the school has been guided by creative leadership from founding principal Milo Stuart (1912- 1930) and others, including Hanson H. Anderson (1937-1958), June Rimmer (1990-1995), Peggy Clark (2000-2005, class of '66), Sarah Bogard (campus administrator/principal 2006-2011, current director of the Career Technology Magnet Program), and current principal Larry Yarrell, another distinguished Tech graduate, class of '75;

    Whereas, Over the years, Tech students have been motivated and encouraged to develop their potential by a great number of gifted teachers and coaches, including Dr. Mark Blachly in science and physics, Dr. Ruth Bozell in English and American literature; Cindy Hartshorn (class of '70), chairperson of the Music Department, has developed the popular show choir "The Technicians"; Karl Schneider and his colleague John Kanouse (class of '56) prepared a team of students for the Bicentennial Constitution competition that placed first among Indiana schools in 1990, 1991 and 1992, and also placed in the top ten in national competition in 1991 and 1992; Bruce McGeath coached several individual and team champions in track at the city, sectional, regional and state levels;

    Whereas, The goal of Milo Stuart to create a comprehensive school to meet the needs of a diverse student body is seen in the wide variety of courses in science, math, visual arts and design, and communications skills, including instruction in eight foreign languages, preparation for health careers, and training to qualify as an Emergency Medical Technician;


    Whereas, By sharing their talents, Tech graduates including the following have enhanced the quality of life in our society in multiple ways: Howard Aiken (class of '18), one of the leaders in the development of the computer; Rev. Albert Ajamie ('41), pastor and professor of theology; John Bartlett ('66), leadership roles with the NAACP and UAW, state legislator since 2008; H. Dean Evans ('47), educator, executive at Lilly Endowment, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1985 to 1992; Gail Collins ('69), architect and professor of graphic arts; Mary P. Collins-Nicewanger ('67), editor and co-owner of the Eastside Voice Community Newspaper; Dr. Hector Garcia ('52), internationally-known sculptor and professor of fine arts; Robert Indiana ('46), nationally-known artist; Jim Lingenfelter ('71), architect and president of the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library Board of Trustees; Rod Morgan ('66), lawyer and 2010 president of the State Bar Association; Zach Mulholland ('02), ranked 3rd in his class, captain of three teams and a 2010 graduate of Indiana University Law School; Tina Parrott-Clarke ('83), All- American in track at Indiana University, Dean's List student and Lt. Colonel in the United States Army; Bill Peet ('33), winner of the National Caldecott Medal for children's literature; Dr. Tony Pizzo ('39), state legislator, head of the Pathology Department at Bloomington City Council member; Michael Price ('66), NBA basketball player and bank executive; Wilma Stewart ('89), nurse and hospital emergency room supervisor; Steven Taylor ('97), actor in the lead role of The Lion King on Broadway for six years; and,

    Whereas, The new $11,000,000 Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center located on the Tech campus will expand the current cooperative relationship between the school and surrounding community, and will be a terrific asset for both: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

                            
    SECTION 1. That the House of Representatives congratulates Arsenal Technical High School on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, honors its long-standing commitment to bettering the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana through its graduates, and thanks

its staff and faculty for their dedicated service to their students and their community.
    SECTION 2. That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to the principal of Arsenal Tech High School.
