A HOUSE RESOLUTION urging the Legislative Council
to assign for interim study the abuse of
methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV).
Whereas, the drug methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV)
is sold legally in stores across Indiana packaged as "bath salts";
and,
Whereas, reported cases of the abuse of bath salts have
become more frequent over the past year, both nationally and in
Indiana, with 15 cases reported in 8 Hoosier counties so far this
year; and,
Whereas, MDPV is designed to mimic the effects of
cocaine and methamphetamine, causing in those who take it
increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and in some
cases extreme attacks of anxiety, paranoia or delusion; and,
Whereas, a number of state legislatures have already moved to study and to control the sale and consumption of bath salts, as many states, including Indiana, have moved to control the abuse of "spice", synthetic cannabinoids sold legally as potpourri or incense; Therefore:
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives directs the Legislative Council to assign for summer study the topic of the sale in Indiana of MDPV and products that contain MDPV, packaged and advertized as "bath salts", giving particular attention to the risks MDPV poses to public health, law enforcement and public safety.
