A HOUSE RESOLUTION to congratulate Indianapolis
Metropolitan High School on winning the Indiana Class A
basketball championship in 2011, the team's first title in the
four years of its existence.
Whereas, Metropolitan High School was chartered in
Indianapolis in 2004, with its basketball team in just its fourth
year in existence, and its third year of state tournament
competition; and,
Whereas, Metropolitan is a diverse school, educating many
students from many different backgrounds, who have already
faced numerous challenges in their lives, requiring dedication
and perseverance; and,
Whereas, the basketball team has no home gym, nor practice uniforms, plays every game on the road, and slept in their coach's home the night before the final game, and so were
made to overcome substantial obstacles simply in order to play
the game; and,
Whereas, the Metropolitan Pumas rose quickly from being
relative unknowns to becoming one of the tournament
standouts, with ESPN featuring Metropolitan's Jerrbryon
Graves' game-winning half-court shot over regional opponent
Madison Shawe Memorial; and,
Whereas, the Pumas overcame their opponents, the Triton
High School Trojans, 59-55 in the final game, holding off a late
Trojan rally and featuring four players scoring in double
figures; and,
Whereas, the Metropolitan Pumas and their success on and
off the basketball court are to be commended for their hard
work and perseverance, as a model for new schools trying to
establish themselves: Therefore,
