A HOUSE RESOLUTION to recognize Aida McCammon
on the occasion of her retirement.
Whereas, Aida McCammon has dedicated more than
twenty-five years of service to the Latino communities of
Indiana, working in particular for equal access to health care,
education and civic life for Latino immigrants; and,
Whereas, educated at universities in Peru and Rome, Ms.
McCammon's career in Indiana began at the Hispanic Center
in Indianapolis, where she took the job of Programs Manager
in 1986; and,
Whereas, in 1995, Ms. McCammon observed a lack of interpreters in doctors' offices and hospitals in Marion County, and tried to meet that need by founding the Hispanic Health Project with Wishard Health Services, a project to provide training and instruction for interpreters, medical workers, and members of Latino communities, which was held up as a model
program by the US Department of Health and Human Services;
and,
Whereas, in 2001, wanting to broaden her engagement with
the Latino communities of Indiana, Ms. McCammon co-founded
the Indiana Latino Institute, an organization dedicated to
empowering and mobilizing grassroots efforts among Latinos
in support of healthy lifestyles and access to healthcare, as well
supporting education in immigrant communities through
scholarships and internships; and,
Whereas, beyond the founding and managing of her own
projects, Ms. McCammon has devoted much of her time to the
work of other charitable projects, serving on the boards of the
Hispanic Education Center, the National Latino Council on
Alcohol and Tobacco, and the Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce, among others; and,
Whereas, Ms. McCammon has already been recognized
and honored by former Indianapolis mayor Bart Peterson and
former Indianapolis Congresswoman Julia Carson: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives officially
honors Aida McCammon for her dedication to minority and
immigrant communities in Indiana, thanks her for her years of
service to her neighbors, congratulates her on her retirement.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House transmit a copy
of this resolution to Aida McCammon.
