A RESOLUTION urging the Indiana Department of
Transportation to rename sections of an Indiana highway after
Sheriff Albert Woodward McCorkle, Trooper Herbert Wade
Smith, Sergeant Gary Wayne Henderson, and Deputy Stacia S.
Lockridge Alyea.
Whereas, Shelby County Sheriff Albert Woodard McCorkle
died of a gunshot wound sustained on October 10, 1880, while
investigating a disturbance at a local bar;
Whereas, Sheriff McCorkle was shot in the middle of the
Shelbyville streets known as Broadway and Harrison;
Whereas, In his honor, the House of Representatives urges the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename that part
of State Road 9 that intersects with State Road 44 "The Sheriff
Albert Woodard McCorkle Memorial Highway";
Whereas, State Trooper Herbert Wade Smith was killed in
the line of duty on December 5, 1946;
Whereas, Trooper Smith was shot and killed while on a
traffic stop just north of State Road 9 North;
Whereas, In his honor, the House of Representatives urges
the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename that part
of State Road 9 North that runs through Shelby County "The
Trooper Herbert Wade Smith Memorial Highway";
Whereas, Sergeant Gary Wayne Henderson of the
Shelbyville Police Department was killed on October 10, 2007,
while responding to a call for assistance from a Shelby County
deputy sheriff who had pulled over a stolen vehicle with two
juvenile suspects;
Whereas, Sergeant Gary Wayne Henderson, age 51 with 33
years of service, was struck by a set of the rear dual tires and
wheels that disengaged from the passenger side of a passing
semi trailer;
Whereas, In his honor, the House of Representatives urges
the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename that part
of Interstate 74 that runs through Shelby County "The Sergeant
Gary Wayne Henderson Memorial Highway";
Whereas, Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Stacia S.
Lockridge Alyea was killed while in pursuit of a drunk driver
on April 18, 1996;
Whereas, Deputy Alyea served with the Shelby County
Sheriff's Department for five years and had been recognized by
the Mothers Against Drunk Driving for her work in drunk
driving enforcement a week before her death;
Whereas, In her honor, the House of Representatives urges the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename that part of State Road 44 West that runs through Shelby County "The
Deputy Stacia S. Lockridge Alyea Memorial Highway"; and
Whereas, Heroes such as these brave law enforcement
officers deserve very special recognition for their sacrifice:
Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives wishes to acknowledge the great sacrifice of these dedicated law enforcement personnel and to honor them further by renaming several sections of Indiana highways after them.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to the families of Sheriff Albert Woodard McCorkle, Trooper Herbert Wade Smith, Sergeant Gary Wayne Henderson, and Deputy Stacia S. Lockridge Alyea, and the commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation.
