A HOUSE RESOLUTION honoring George Thiel.
Whereas, George Thiel was born on March 20, 1926, in St.
John, Indiana, and was raised on a seven acre farm on Theilen
Street with his three brothers and one sister;
Whereas, George attended St. John the Evangelist Grade
School, Catholic Central High School (later known as Bishop
Noll Institute), and Dyer Central (later known as Lake Central
High School);
Whereas, Upon graduation in April 1944, George enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Fort McClellan, Alabama, for seven weeks of basic training;
Whereas, Upon completion of basic training, George was sent overseas;
Whereas, Serving in the 99th Infantry Division, George was
promoted to Sergeant, participated in the Battle of the Bulge,
where he earned a Purple Heart, and was honorably
discharged from the Army in September 1945;
Whereas, Because George was fluent in the German
language, he also served as an interpreter during the war;
Whereas, Returning home to Indiana, George was hired at
Christenson Construction in Griffith, where he worked with his
father and brother Clarence, retiring from this position on
December 28, 1990;
Whereas, George joined the Griffith Fire Department,
January 2, 1952, and was appointed Fire Chief in 1983;
Whereas, Upon his retirement in January 2012, he will
have completed 60 years of service to the community;
Whereas, Active in the community, George is often found at
the fire department or the Griffith Town Hall and can be seen
at every Griffith High School football and basketball home
game serving as a volunteer and avid fan;
Whereas, George married Peggy Vestal on April 14, 1951,
and moved to Griffith in 1952 and still resides at the same
location;
Whereas, Peggy and George had three children, Mike,
Larry, and Sandy; and
Whereas, George Thiel has dedicated his life to serving
others: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives congratulates George Thiel on the occasion of his retirement and
thanks him for his dedicated service.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to George Thiel and
his family.
