RESOLUTION No. ________
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Sinai Temple of
Michigan City on their 100th anniversary.
Whereas, The Sinai Congregation is vital to the diversity and
spiritual well being of Northwest Indiana;
Whereas, Sinai Congregation formed under the leadership of
Moses Moritz, Fred Stern, Albert K. Hoodwin, Louis Bresken, Samuel
Nathanson, and others in 1913;
Whereas, The formation of this permanent congregation, which
first met to worship in a rented hall in 1904, and in various temporary
locations after that, created a stable cultural center and religious
home for the Reform Jewish community of Northwest Indiana;
Whereas, Sinai Congregation successfully weathered periods of
turmoil in American History, including two World Wars and the Great
Depression;
Whereas, The Congregation outgrew its place of worship a
number of times in its early years, requiring the Congregation to build
and dedicate a new permeant
Temple, the Sinai Temple, in Michigan
City in 1953; and
Whereas, Despite long odds and serious challenges, the Sinai
Congregation continues to grow and its Temple continues to stand as
a cultural and religious cornerstone in the Northwest Indiana
community one hundred years after its founding: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors the Sinai
Congregation on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the Indiana House of
Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to the Sinai
Congregation.
