    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION to commemorate the 200^th anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe.

    Whereas, on November 7, 2011, Indiana will observe the 200^th anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe, fought near Battle Ground, Tippecanoe County, on November 7, 1811; and,

    Whereas, the battle has for two hundred years kept an honored place in the history of Indiana; and,

    Whereas, following the establishment of the Indiana Territory in 1800, first territorial Governor William Henry Harrison strove to open more Hoosier land for settlement and eventual statehood, and in the course of these efforts, aroused the anger of the local Native American populations, who then gathered together in a resistance movement at Prophetstown, led by the Shawnee brothers Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa, and armed by British agents from Canada; and,

    Whereas, several famous companies of Indiana militia joined the battle under the command of Governor Harrison, including the Yellow Jackets of Corydon and Harrison County, and the Indiana Rangers, raised by the Governor himself for the defense of the territory; and,

    Whereas, with the two armies facing off near the confluence of the Tippecanoe and Wabash Rivers, the hilltop camp of the territorial militia was attacked by the warriors of Tecumseh's Confederacy in the hours before dawn on November 7, 1811, and the two sides struggled until after sunrise, when the Governor's superior position was made clear and Tecumseh retreated; and,

    Whereas, the battle was immediately understood as an event of national importance, inflaming American opinion against the British until Congress declared war in the summer of 1812, and making the political career of Governor Harrison, "the Hero of Tippecanoe," who won the presidency in 1840 calling for voters to elect "Tippecanoe, and Tyler too;" and,

    Whereas, in the aftermath of its defeat, Tecumseh's Confederacy withdrew from Indiana into Canada, and the territory was opened and settled quickly enough to be granted statehood by Congress only five years later in 1816; Therefore:
                                

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly commemorates the 200^th anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe, recognizing the foundational role the battle played in the history of Indiana as well as of the whole country, and honoring those early Hoosiers who gave their lives for the establishment of our home state.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House transmit a copy
of this resolution to the Tippecanoe County Historical Association.
