A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., America's first
Greek-letter organization established for and by
African-American women, is a 260,000 member service
organization with more than 900 chapters throughout the
United States, the Caribbean, Canada, Germany, Korea,
West Africa, and Japan;
Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded
on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., on
January 15, 1908;
Whereas, Ethel Hedgemen Lyle originated the idea of
creating a sorority to help enrich the social and intellectual
aspects of college life for minorities;
Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. consists of
college-educated women of diverse backgrounds from
around the world, including African, Caucasian, Asian,
Native American, Hispanic, and Indian;
Whereas, The forming of Alpha Kappa Alpha helped break
barriers for African-American women in areas where little
power or authority existed because of a lack of opportunities
for minorities and women in the early 20th century;
Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha members have helped to improve social and economic conditions through community
service programs and independent initiatives, such as the
Mississippi Health Clinic, and influenced federal legislation
by Congressional lobbying through the National
Non-Partisan Lobby on Civil and Democratic Rights;
Whereas, Today Alpha Kappa Alpha is focusing on "Global
Leadership through Timeless Service";
Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha plans to accomplish this goal
through initiatives like Emerging Young Leaders Initiatives,
Health Initiatives, Asthma Prevention and Management
Initiative, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability
Initiative, Global Poverty Initiative, Economic Security
Initiative, Social Justice and Human Rights Initiative, and
Internal Leadership Training for Excellent Service Initiative;
and
Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha is dedicated to serving all
mankind and has improved the lives of many people
throughout the years: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly thanks the
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for their many hours of
service to the nation.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to the officers of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
