    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring George Taliaferro for being an ambassador for civil and human rights.

    Whereas, George Taliaferro was born on January 8th 1927, in Gates, Tennessee;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro attended Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro was a State Finalist in high-jump, pole vault, and broad jump in 1945;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1945;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro attended Indiana University on a full-ride athletic scholarship;


    Whereas, George Taliaferro met with Indiana University President Herman Wells about Bloomington area restaurants that refused to serve African Americans;

    Whereas, the result of the meeting was President Wells telling local restaurants that all Indiana University students would be banned from patronizing their establishment if they practiced discrimination based on race;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro was named Indiana University football team MVP, All-Big Ten and All-American in 1947;


    Whereas, George Taliaferro was a first team All American Halfback in 1948;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro was inducted into the Helm's College Football Hall of Fame in 1967;


    Whereas, George Taliaferro was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1976;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro was inducted into the National College Football Foundation's Hall of Fame in 1981;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro was the first African American football player to be drafted into the National Football League in 1949;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro was the Los Angeles Dons' Rookie of the Year in 1949;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro was a Pro Bowl Member in 1951, 1952, and 1953;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro retired from football in 1955;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro graduated from Howard University with a master's degree in social work in 1962;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro emphasized working with prisoners, ex-offenders, and people addicted to drugs in his chosen field of social work;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro served as Special Assistant to Indiana University President John W. Ryan from 1972-1983;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro assisted in the development of equal opportunity programs and policies for staff and students at Indiana University;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro served as coordinator of the state wide Affirmative Action Plan for Indiana Universities' eight-campus system;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro has served a total of 45 years in higher education, 20 with Indiana University;


    Whereas, George Taliaferro has served on the Board of Directors for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Monroe County of which he is the president and founder;

    Whereas, George Taliaferro is a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); and,

    Whereas, George Taliaferro served on the Board of Directors as Chairman at the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA): Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives honors the trail-blazing efforts of George Taliaferro in taking the lead in bring the civil rights movement to Indiana, offering inmates a second chance at rehabilitation, and providing roads for African American athletes to pursue their dreams.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to George Taliaferro.
