RESOLUTION



        A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing Terre Haute as the 2010 Community of the Year.

    Whereas, The Terre Haute community has undergone an incredible transformation led by many sectors, including education, health care, financial services, manufacturing, the arts, and recreation;

    Whereas, These deeply rooted partnerships have resulted in the attraction of more than $2 billion in public and private funding;

    Whereas, Vigo County is home to four distinguished institutions of higher education, Ivy Tech Community College of the Wabash Valley, Indiana State University, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, which provide exceptional educational experiences to more than 22,000 students annually;

    Whereas, The downtown Terre Haute community has been revitalized with the construction of two new hotels, the opening of many new businesses, and the growth of Indiana State University;

    Whereas, The development of the Clabber Girl Festival marketplace has provided the infrastructure and space to expand Terre Haute's festivals, create a farmer's market, and regularly bring visitors to this area;

    Whereas, The community's youth programs have been

significantly enhanced with the opening of a new $5 million, state-of-the-art facility for the Terre Haute Children's Museum, and the creation of many youth education and social service programs;

    Whereas, The State's recreational offerings have been expanded greatly with the development of one of America's largest wetlands projects, the 48,000 acre Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area, and the expansion of the National Road Heritage Trail;

    Whereas, Work is under way to further transform the riverfront area along the Wabash River through the Riverscape Project;

    Whereas, Terre Haute's health care facilities have been greatly enhanced with the addition of Terre Haute Regional Hospital's Hope Center and the completion of a new $185 million facility for Union Hospital;

    Whereas, Terre Haute is home to a new collegiate baseball team, the Terre Haute Rex, which successfully concluded its first season in the Prospect League in 2010;

    Whereas, The LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course has gained a national reputation by hosting the NCAA Division 1 Cross Country Championships for eight of the past nine years and has become the permanent site for the Indiana High School Cross Country State Finals;

    Whereas, The Terre Haute community has a rich array of arts and cultural resources with a growing presence of public art led by Art Spaces, Inc.;

    Whereas, Terre Haute's diversified business and industry sectors continue to grow; and

    Whereas, Terre Haute has been declared the 2010 Community of the Year by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce: Therefore,


Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes and pays tribute to the community of Terre Haute for all of these great achievements.
    SECTION 2. That the Indiana General Assembly urges Governor Mitch Daniels to proclaim February 7, 2011, as Terre Haute Community of the Year Day at the Statehouse.
    SECTION 3. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives to Governor Daniels and Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett.
