A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
higher education.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SECTION 1. IC 21-44-5-19 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
AS A
NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
1, 2012]:
Sec. 19. (a) The board shall establish an education
program for first year medical students that addresses health
disparities and the disproportional access to health care services
affecting racial and ethnic minority groups in Indiana.
(b) The education program established under subsection (a)
must include the following:
(1) Information on the existence and magnitude of health
disparities affecting racial and ethnic minority groups in
Indiana.
(2) The potential for bias and mistrust that physicians and
patients may have and the effect it may have on a clinical
encounter.
(3) Effective skills to communicate with individuals from
another culture.
(4) Suggestions to reduce health disparities among racial and
ethnic minority groups.
(c) The education program required under this section must be
implemented not later than July 1, 2013.
