HOUSE BILL No. 1251



    A BILL FOR AN ACT concerning health.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SOURCE: ; (10)IN1251.1.1. -->     SECTION 1. [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2010] (a) The state department of health shall study the effects of the use of antibiotics on animals in nontherapeutic situations.
    (b) The study conducted under this SECTION must focus on:
        (1) the potential for the use of antibiotics on animals in nontherapeutic situations to result in the development of drug resistant bacteria; and
        (2) the effects of those drug resistant bacteria on animals and people who are exposed to the drug resistant bacteria either through the environment or through the food they consume.
    (c) The state department of health shall report the results of the study conducted under this SECTION to the general assembly not later than July 1, 2011. The report must be in an electronic format under IC 5-14-6.
    (d) This SECTION expires December 31, 2011.
