2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Dawn Elaine Miller of Mundelein, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on May 18, 2018; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Dawn Miller was born in Chicago to John and | ||||||
6 | Gwendolyn Schey on February 6, 1942; she earned a degree in | ||||||
7 | gemology from Boston University; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Dawn Miller and her husband, Marvin, owned and | ||||||
9 | operated bakeries in Mundelein (Miller's), Lindenhurst | ||||||
10 | (Countryside), and Round Lake (Joseph's); she also worked for | ||||||
11 | Rogers and Holland Jewelers; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, For over 42 years, Dawn Miller was a passionate | ||||||
13 | leader for public education; she served Diamond Lake District | ||||||
14 | 76 as a school board member and parent from 1973 to 1984; she | ||||||
15 | spent nine years on the Mundelein High School District 120 | ||||||
16 | board, four years as president, and would hand out a dollar | ||||||
17 | bill as she congratulated each graduate noting, "This is the | ||||||
18 | first dollar your high school graduation has earned you."; from | ||||||
19 | 1990 to 1992, she served as vice president of the Illinois | ||||||
20 | Association of School Boards; in 1992, she became a field | ||||||
21 | service director and later director of executive searches for | ||||||
22 | the Illinois Association of School Boards, where she served for |

1 | 21 years; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Dawn Miller also served on task forces and special | ||||||
3 | commissions for the National Association of School Boards and | ||||||
4 | the U.S. Department of Education; she was a frequent presenter | ||||||
5 | at numerous national and state school board and school | ||||||
6 | administrator conferences; her children established the Dawn | ||||||
7 | E. Miller Spirit of Education Foundation, which annually | ||||||
8 | presents a scholarship to an Elementary District 76 graduate | ||||||
9 | and Mundelein High School graduate who embodies Dawn's spirit | ||||||
10 | of service and lifelong dedication to education and its ability | ||||||
11 | to enrich communities; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Dawn Miller served as a Lake County Republican | ||||||
13 | precinct committeeman and Lake County chairwoman; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Dawn Miller loved precious stones, including the | ||||||
15 | numerous stones she obtained during her 25th anniversary cruise | ||||||
16 | with Marvin to South America; she loved all things Disney World | ||||||
17 | and her beloved Great Danes, and for over 25 years she bred and | ||||||
18 | showed many champion Great Danes; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Dawn Miller supported the downtown business | ||||||
20 | community's Gypsy Days, Jaycees Chicken Dinners, and Mundelein | ||||||
21 | Junior Football as a cheerleading coach; she enjoyed her life | ||||||
22 | as a snowbird and loved her hideaway community home in Ft. |

1 | Myers, Florida, especially Merion Village and its Thursday | ||||||
2 | night patio events and Monday night bingo and trivia; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Dawn Miller was preceded in death by her husband, | ||||||
4 | Marvin; her daughter, Laura Joy; her sister, Debra Oliva; and | ||||||
5 | her brother, Scott Schey; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Dawn Miller is survived by her children, Marvin | ||||||
7 | (Karen), Geoffrey (Sharon), Melody Miller Clegg (Dan), Valery | ||||||
8 | Gallagher (Peter), Heather Miller Brown, and Dr. April Miller; | ||||||
9 | her grandchildren, Stephanie, Alison (David Jarquin), Geoffrey | ||||||
10 | Jr., Steven, Addison, Clark, Arthur, "her little buddy" Owen, | ||||||
11 | Patrick, and Brendan; her great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and | ||||||
12 | Alex; her sister, Jacqueline Goczeski; her brother, John | ||||||
13 | (Deborah) Schey; and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
| ||||||
14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
16 | Dawn Elaine Miller, and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
17 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
18 | further

19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to the family of Dawn Miller as an expression of our | ||||||
21 | deepest sympathy.
