2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Irene Ruth Schindel of Naperville, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on May 1, 2018 at the age of 100; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Irene Schindel was born to Albert and Fredricka | ||||||
6 | Blasing Hassert on April 13, 1918; she was raised in Will | ||||||
7 | County, attended a rural one-room school through the 8th grade, | ||||||
8 | and graduated from Lemont Township High School in 1936; she | ||||||
9 | graduated from Joliet Junior College and earned a Bachelor of | ||||||
10 | Arts from National Louis University; she completed graduate | ||||||
11 | work at Northern Illinois University and married George Andrew | ||||||
12 | Schindel on January 18, 1948; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Irene Schindel had a teaching career which lasted | ||||||
14 | over 40 years; she taught at several rural schools and schools | ||||||
15 | in Westmont, Warrenville, Woodridge, and Naperville; she | ||||||
16 | retired in 1979 after teaching 5th grade at Beebe Elementary | ||||||
17 | School in Naperville for 20 years; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, After her retirement, Irene Schindel devoted much | ||||||
19 | of her time to tutoring both children and adults who were | ||||||
20 | learning English as a second language, teaching literacy skills | ||||||
21 | to adults, and volunteering as a reading coach in public | ||||||
22 | schools; and

1 | WHEREAS, Irene Schindel was a member of the Family Service | ||||||
2 | Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Will | ||||||
3 | County Farm Bureau, and the DuPage County Chapter of the | ||||||
4 | Illinois Retired Teachers Association, where she also served as | ||||||
5 | secretary; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Irene Schindel joined several women's golf | ||||||
7 | leagues, and played multiple times a week at White Eagle | ||||||
8 | Country Club as well as at Springbrook and Naperbrook Golf | ||||||
9 | Courses; she also stayed fit by walking, often along the | ||||||
10 | Naperville Riverwalk near her home; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Irene Schindel joined the Community United | ||||||
12 | Methodist Church in Naperville (formerly First Evangelical | ||||||
13 | United Brethren Church) in 1954 and was a member for over 60 | ||||||
14 | years; she served as a children's Sunday School teacher and the | ||||||
15 | Women's Book Club secretary-treasurer; she participated in the | ||||||
16 | multi-cultural outreach team, attended the Forum adult class, | ||||||
17 | and worked on many committees; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Throughout her adult life, Irene Schindel | ||||||
19 | traveled frequently, making her first cross-country road trip | ||||||
20 | to California in 1939 with a sister and brother; she visited | ||||||
21 | most of the states in the U.S. as well as countries in North | ||||||
22 | and Central America, Europe, North and West Africa, Asia, and |

1 | Australia; she made her last solo trip at the age of 91, and | ||||||
2 | her last family trip at the age of 96; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Irene Schindel enjoyed reading; she preferred | ||||||
4 | books, magazines, and newspapers to movies or television; she | ||||||
5 | loved spending time in her own yard where she tended her lawn | ||||||
6 | and garden until the age of 92; she and her husband shared an | ||||||
7 | appreciation for dance music, especially the big band sound of | ||||||
8 | the 1930s and 40s, and were members of a ballroom dance club | ||||||
9 | for decades; she enjoyed cooking and made traditional | ||||||
10 | midwestern fare, as well as gourmet dishes; she was also a | ||||||
11 | master baker; every Christmas she made intricately decorated | ||||||
12 | cookies for family and friends; her pies, cakes, and caramels | ||||||
13 | were always in demand; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Irene Schindel was preceded in death by her | ||||||
15 | husband, George; her parents; her older sister and her three | ||||||
16 | brothers and their spouses, Evelyn Homerding (John), Howard | ||||||
17 | Hassert (Dorothy), Roy Hassert (Irene), and George Hassert | ||||||
18 | (Blanche); her brother-in-law, Harold Thoman; her | ||||||
19 | parents-in-law, Edmund and Ida Hagemann Schindel; her four | ||||||
20 | sisters and three brothers-in-law and their spouses, Viola | ||||||
21 | Kinsey, Emma Bailey (Warren), Margaret Schultz (Ben), Gladys | ||||||
22 | Venard (Charles), Raymond Schindel (Alice), Edmund Schindel II | ||||||
23 | (Marion), and William Schindel (Betty); her brother-in-law, | ||||||
24 | Edward Heim; three nieces; and seven nephews; and

1 | WHEREAS, Irene Schindel is survived by her loving daughter | ||||||
2 | and son-in-law, Carol and Hendrik Knipscheer; her | ||||||
3 | granddaughter, Christine Belling; her grandson and | ||||||
4 | granddaughter-in-law, Paul and Beth Knipscheer; her | ||||||
5 | great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nicholas Belling and | ||||||
6 | Christian and Ellis Knipscheer; her sister, Pearl Thoman; her | ||||||
7 | sister-in-law, Vernette Heim; eight nieces; 11 nephews; many | ||||||
8 | great-nieces and great-nephews and their children; and her | ||||||
9 | long-time, dedicated caregiver, Karen Shirky, who devoted | ||||||
10 | herself to providing for Irene's needs for eight years; | ||||||
11 | therefore, be it

12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
14 | Irene Ruth Schindel, and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
15 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
16 | further

17 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
18 | presented to the family of Irene Schindel as an expression of | ||||||
19 | our deepest sympathy.
