SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Irene Ruth Schindel of Naperville, who
4passed away on May 1, 2018 at the age of 100; and
5 WHEREAS, Irene Schindel was born to Albert and Fredricka
6Blasing Hassert on April 13, 1918; she was raised in Will
7County, attended a rural one-room school through the 8th grade,
8and graduated from Lemont Township High School in 1936; she
9graduated from Joliet Junior College and earned a Bachelor of
10Arts from National Louis University; she completed graduate
11work at Northern Illinois University and married George Andrew
12Schindel on January 18, 1948; and
13 WHEREAS, Irene Schindel had a teaching career which lasted
14over 40 years; she taught at several rural schools and schools
15in Westmont, Warrenville, Woodridge, and Naperville; she
16retired in 1979 after teaching 5th grade at Beebe Elementary
17School in Naperville for 20 years; and
18 WHEREAS, After her retirement, Irene Schindel devoted much
19of her time to tutoring both children and adults who were
20learning English as a second language, teaching literacy skills
21to adults, and volunteering as a reading coach in public
22schools; and

1 WHEREAS, Irene Schindel was a member of the Family Service
2Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Will
3County Farm Bureau, and the DuPage County Chapter of the
4Illinois Retired Teachers Association, where she also served as
5secretary; and
6 WHEREAS, Irene Schindel joined several women's golf
7leagues, and played multiple times a week at White Eagle
8Country Club as well as at Springbrook and Naperbrook Golf
9Courses; she also stayed fit by walking, often along the
10Naperville Riverwalk near her home; and
11 WHEREAS, Irene Schindel joined the Community United
12Methodist Church in Naperville (formerly First Evangelical
13United Brethren Church) in 1954 and was a member for over 60
14years; she served as a children's Sunday School teacher and the
15Women's Book Club secretary-treasurer; she participated in the
16multi-cultural outreach team, attended the Forum adult class,
17and worked on many committees; and
18 WHEREAS, Throughout her adult life, Irene Schindel
19traveled frequently, making her first cross-country road trip
20to California in 1939 with a sister and brother; she visited
21most of the states in the U.S. as well as countries in North
22and Central America, Europe, North and West Africa, Asia, and

1Australia; she made her last solo trip at the age of 91, and
2her last family trip at the age of 96; and
3 WHEREAS, Irene Schindel enjoyed reading; she preferred
4books, magazines, and newspapers to movies or television; she
5loved spending time in her own yard where she tended her lawn
6and garden until the age of 92; she and her husband shared an
7appreciation for dance music, especially the big band sound of
8the 1930s and 40s, and were members of a ballroom dance club
9for decades; she enjoyed cooking and made traditional
10midwestern fare, as well as gourmet dishes; she was also a
11master baker; every Christmas she made intricately decorated
12cookies for family and friends; her pies, cakes, and caramels
13were always in demand; and
14 WHEREAS, Irene Schindel was preceded in death by her
15husband, George; her parents; her older sister and her three
16brothers and their spouses, Evelyn Homerding (John), Howard
17Hassert (Dorothy), Roy Hassert (Irene), and George Hassert
18(Blanche); her brother-in-law, Harold Thoman; her
19parents-in-law, Edmund and Ida Hagemann Schindel; her four
20sisters and three brothers-in-law and their spouses, Viola
21Kinsey, Emma Bailey (Warren), Margaret Schultz (Ben), Gladys
22Venard (Charles), Raymond Schindel (Alice), Edmund Schindel II
23(Marion), and William Schindel (Betty); her brother-in-law,
24Edward Heim; three nieces; and seven nephews; and

1 WHEREAS, Irene Schindel is survived by her loving daughter
2and son-in-law, Carol and Hendrik Knipscheer; her
3granddaughter, Christine Belling; her grandson and
4granddaughter-in-law, Paul and Beth Knipscheer; her
5great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nicholas Belling and
6Christian and Ellis Knipscheer; her sister, Pearl Thoman; her
7sister-in-law, Vernette Heim; eight nieces; 11 nephews; many
8great-nieces and great-nephews and their children; and her
9long-time, dedicated caregiver, Karen Shirky, who devoted
10herself to providing for Irene's needs for eight years;
11therefore, be it
12 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Irene Ruth Schindel, and extend our sincere condolences to her
15family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
16further
17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Irene Schindel as an expression of
19our deepest sympathy.
