SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jerome Samuel Johnson; and
4 WHEREAS, Jerome Johnson was born to Milton P. and Katherine
5Goolsby Johnson on November 25, 1946; he attended Kozminski
6Elementary School and Hyde Park High School; he served in the
7United States Army in Vietnam, where he achieved the rank of
81st Lieutenant and served as commanding officer of his platoon;
9his leadership was widely publicized by former United States
10Senator and Secretary of Defense, Charles Hagel, who served
11under Jerome; he earned two Silver Stars for his service; he
12married Laura Meriweather on September 6, 1969; and
13 WHEREAS, Jerome Johnson retired from Commonwealth Edison
14and embarked on a second career as a funeral director; and
15 WHEREAS, Jerome Johnson was affectionately known as
16"Rome"; he was a part-time comedian, part-time biblical
17scholar, part-time philosopher, and full-time man of leisure;
18and
19 WHEREAS, Jerome Johnson was preceded in death by his
20parents; his mother-in-love, Anna Ruth Meriweather; his
21siblings, Milton Jr., Ronald/Jason, Joyce, Alice, Melvin,

1Jerrel, and John; his nephew, David Heard, and his niece,
2Katrice Johnson; and
3 WHEREAS, Jerome Johnson is survived by his wife, Laura; his
4sons, Joel (Karla), Justin, and Joshua; his grandsons, Khalil
5and Hasan; his siblings, Marla Jean, Marvin, Perry, Karen,
6Janice Webb, and Jeffery; and numerous nieces, nephews,
7cousins, extended family, friends, and colleagues; therefore,
8be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Jerome Samuel Johnson, and extend our sincere condolences to
12his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
13further
14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Jerome Johnson as an expression of
16our deepest sympathy.
