SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. Donald Chatman; and
4 WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman was born in New Orleans to Dr.
5Aristotle Lorenzo and Eulacie S. Chatman in 1934 and raised in
6Baton Rouge; he attended the Mount Herman School in Mount
7Herman, Massachusetts and then earned his Bachelor of Arts in
8Physical Anthropology from Harvard University; he earned his
9medical degree at the Meharry Medical College of Medicine in
10Nashville and opened a practice in general medicine in Lake
11Charles, Louisiana; he then served as a captain in the United
12States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1972; and
13 WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman moved to Chicago to complete a
14residency in OB-GYN at Michael Reese Hospital; in 1969, he
15became one of the first African American physicians to serve as
16an attending physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the
17Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, serving
18as Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics
19and Gynecology on two separate occasions; he served as an
20attending physician at South Chicago Community Hospital,
21Provident Hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Mercy
22Hospital and Medical Center; at the time of his retirement, he
23was an associate professor of Clinical Obstetrics and

1Gynecology at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine; and
2 WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman lectured both nationally and
3internationally at organizations including the American
4Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the International
5Society for Gynecologic Laparoscopy, and the World Congress of
6Gynecologic Endoscopy; he was featured on the Oprah Winfrey
7Show and Good Morning America; he served as the first African
8American president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary
9of the Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL); he
10also served as a member of the board of directors and as
11associate editor of the journal of the same organization; and
12 WHEREAS, Most recently, Dr. Chatman was writing a book
13memorializing the extraordinary journey of his father,
14escaping sharecropping in Louisiana at the age of 14 to pursue
15his education; and
16 WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman loved spending time with his family
17and friends, reading and writing, playing golf, and traveling
18the world with his wife and friends; and
19 WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman was a member of the physician club,
20the Saracens, and the social club, the Chicagoans; he and his
21wife frequently supported local causes and organizations,
22attending social events and fundraisers; and

1 WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman was preceded in death by his parents
2and two brothers; and
3 WHEREAS, Dr. Chatman is survived by his wife, Linda C.; his
4daughters, Lynn Chatman Todman (Michael) and Eleanor Louise
5Chatman; his son, Eric Leveritt Chatman (Angela); his
6mother-in-law, Lois Wilson; his father-in-law, James Wilson;
7his stepsons, Carl R. and Bruce E. Golden (Marie); his cousin,
8Fay Green; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and
9numerous extended family members and friends; therefore, be it
10 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Dr. Donald Chatman, and extend our sincere condolences to his
13family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
14further
15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Dr. Chatman as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
