1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Endometriosis is a disease of the female | ||||||
3 | reproductive system; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to that | ||||||
5 | normally found in the uterus begins to grow outside of the | ||||||
6 | uterus, leading to chronic, debilitating pelvic pain; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Endometriosis is a leading cause of female | ||||||
8 | infertility; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Endometriosis affects one in 10 women of | ||||||
10 | childbearing age in the United States; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, On average, there is a 10-year delay from the | ||||||
12 | onset of symptoms to the final diagnosis of Endometriosis; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, U.S. Endometriosis patients were hospitalized | ||||||
14 | 105,123 days in 2010 because of their disease; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Women with Endometriosis can lose 11 hours per | ||||||
16 | work week through lost productivity and absenteeism due to | ||||||
17 | pain; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Fifty-one percent of Endometriosis patients |

1 | report that their disease detrimentally affects their job; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The estimated total annual societal burden of | ||||||
3 | Endometriosis-related symptoms in the U.S. is $56 billion, or | ||||||
4 | $10,824 per patient; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, There is no cure for Endometriosis; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, More research is necessary to develop treatment | ||||||
7 | options to manage this debilitating disease; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Traditionally, providers have focused on managing | ||||||
9 | the associated pain with oral contraceptives, progestins, | ||||||
10 | danazol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), | ||||||
11 | opioids, and GnRH agonists, many of which are not specifically | ||||||
12 | indicated for the treatment of Endometriosis; in more extensive | ||||||
13 | cases, surgical interventions (e.g., laparotomy or | ||||||
14 | laparoscopy) are often pursued and may not be curative for all | ||||||
15 | individuals; and

16 | WHEREAS, More research is needed to find additional | ||||||
17 | treatment options to manage this debilitating disease; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Education is important for promoting awareness of | ||||||
19 | symptoms and early detection and diagnosis of Endometriosis; | ||||||
20 | therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare March of | ||||||
3 | 2018 as "Endometriosis Awareness Month" in the State of | ||||||
4 | Illinois and encourage the State to observe the month with | ||||||
5 | related awareness and educational campaigns; and be it further
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Public Health is | ||||||
7 | encouraged to make available online resources and current | ||||||
8 | information on Endometriosis, including disease prevalence, | ||||||
9 | symptoms, and treatment options; and be it further
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | delivered to the Director of Public Health.
