2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the deaths of Edward and Ernestine Nedza, who
passed | ||||||
4 | away on January 24, 2018 and February 6, 2018; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Edward Nedza, who as an Illinois State Senator, | ||||||
6 | Chicago 31st Ward Democratic
Committeeman, and U.S. Navy | ||||||
7 | Veteran, dedicated many years of his life to serving his city, | ||||||
8 | state, and country; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Edward Nedza was born to Polish immigrants on July | ||||||
10 | 26, 1927 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy
at the age of 17; he was | ||||||
11 | a Corpsman attached to a Marine Corps unit and reached the rank | ||||||
12 | of Petty
Officer 1st Class; he served in the Philippines, | ||||||
13 | Guiuan Eastern Samar, and Okinawa; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Upon returning to Chicago from his military | ||||||
15 | service, Edward Nedza began a small business
delivering butter, | ||||||
16 | cheese, and eggs to customers in his neighborhood; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Edward Nedza continued his public service in | ||||||
18 | various roles in city government, including
years as 31st Ward | ||||||
19 | Democratic Committeeman and eventually becoming first deputy | ||||||
20 | commissioner of
the Department of Aviation under Mayor Michael | ||||||
21 | Bilandic; and

1 | WHEREAS, Edward Nedza served Illinois as a State Senator in | ||||||
2 | the 19th District from 1979 to 1987; his
legislative | ||||||
3 | accomplishments in Springfield included creating a state | ||||||
4 | advisory council to increase
graduation rates at public | ||||||
5 | schools, improving the fairness of assessment tests for | ||||||
6 | Hispanic students,
strengthening gun laws prohibiting the sale | ||||||
7 | of firearms to minors, enhancing protections of restricted | ||||||
8 | areas
at airports, and designating the first Monday in March as | ||||||
9 | a state holiday in honor of Casimir Pulaski's
birthday; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Edward Nedza married his beloved wife, Ernestine | ||||||
11 | "Tina" Nedza on February 19, 1955 and
they raised two children, | ||||||
12 | Jim and Kathy; together, they enjoyed nearly 63 years of | ||||||
13 | marriage, friendship, and many games
of gin rummy; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Edward Nedza is survived by his children, Jim | ||||||
15 | (Mitch) Nedza and Kathy (Steve} Buhe; his
cherished | ||||||
16 | grandchildren, Elizabeth (Ross) Buhe and Jonathan (Cristina) | ||||||
17 | Buhe; his great-granddaughter,
Isabella Buhe; many nieces and | ||||||
18 | nephews; and his extended family of friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
21 | Edward and Ernestine Nedza, and extend our sincere
condolences | ||||||
22 | to their family, friends, and all who knew and loved them; and |
