| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
| ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Carl Edward Mescher of Massac County, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on January 15, 2020; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Carl Edward Mescher was born to Herman and Clara | ||||||
6 | (Moller) Mescher in Metropolis on August 12, 1920; he dedicated | ||||||
7 | his life to the service of Illinoisans within Massac County; | ||||||
8 | and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Carl Edward Mescher was a Navy veteran of World | ||||||
10 | War II; he served on the USS Pennsylvania during the attack on | ||||||
11 | Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941; he heroically contained | ||||||
12 | dangerous and destructive fires throughout the bombing raids | ||||||
13 | that day; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Carl Edward Mescher was a radioman in the OS2U3 | ||||||
15 | Kingfisher seaplane and was awarded the Air Medal for | ||||||
16 | courageous action in the Pacific theater at Makin, Kwajalein, | ||||||
17 | and Eniwetok Atolla; the commendation recognized his skillful | ||||||
18 | performance of duty in establishing and maintaining excellent | ||||||
19 | communications between his plane and parent ship while braving | ||||||
20 | heavy antiaircraft fire and extremely hazardous flying | ||||||
21 | conditions; and

1 | WHEREAS, Carl Edward Mescher finished his military service | ||||||
2 | testing radio navigation equipment in PBY Catalina seaplanes at | ||||||
3 | Banana River Naval Station where he rose to the rank of Chief | ||||||
4 | Petty Officer; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Following his illustrious military career from | ||||||
6 | 1940 to 1946, Carl Edward Mescher operated Soil Services, a | ||||||
7 | local fertilizer store, until his retirement in 1982; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Carl Edward Mescher continued to farm and raise | ||||||
9 | cattle until his health no longer allowed it; he was a member | ||||||
10 | of St. John's Church and the American Legion Post 306; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Carl Edward Mescher was preceded in death by his | ||||||
12 | parents, Herman and Clara (Moller) Mescher; and his five | ||||||
13 | brothers, Omer, Amos, Loyd, Troy, and Otis Mescher; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Carl Edward Mescher is survived by his nieces, his | ||||||
15 | nephews, his extended relatives, and his friends; therefore, be | ||||||
16 | it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| ||||||
19 | Carl Edward Mescher and extend our sincere
condolences to his | ||||||
20 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved
him; and be it | ||||||
