SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Maria Martha Perez Laubhan of Hyde Park,
4who passed away on June 12, 2017; and
5 WHEREAS, Maria Laubhan was born in Mexico; at the age of
612, her family joined her father in the United States and
7settled in Chicago; she attended St. Francis Xavier School and
8graduated from Schurz High School in 1983, where she worked on
9the school newspaper and was instructed by then-editor of
10Crain's Chicago Business, Dan Miller; she earned a bachelor's
11degree in Latin American Studies from DePaul University in
121988, during which time she worked on the news desk at Time
13magazine's Chicago bureau; she earned a master's degree in
14government and international relations in 1990 from the
15University of Notre Dame, where she worked as a research
16assistant; and
17 WHEREAS, From 1991 until 1995, Maria Laubhan held several
18positions at the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, now known
19as Prospanica, including working as a Chicago-based field
20manager for its summer enrichment program for high school
21students and as an education programs consultant; she then
22worked for two years at Barat College in Lake Forest as its
23Director of Career Planning; in 1998, she joined the staff of

1Northwestern University as the coordinator of its
2Hispanic/Latino student outreach; she left the university the
3following year to take a tenure-track teaching position at the
4College of Lake County, where she later earned tenure; and
5 WHEREAS, Maria Laubhan is survived by her husband, Laubhan;
6her son, Daniel; her brothers, Horacio, Miguel, Jose, David,
7and Baltazar; her sisters, Reyna and Aurora; and her father,
8Miguel; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Maria Martha Perez Laubhan, and extend our sincere condolences
12to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be
13it further
14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Maria Laubhan as an expression of
16our deepest sympathy.
