SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Robert Steele of North Lawndale, who
4passed away on June 19, 2017; and
5 WHEREAS, Robert Steele was the son of former Cook County
6Commissioner and Board President Bobbie Steele; he graduated
7from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland; and
8 WHEREAS, Robert Steele was commissioner of Cook County's
92nd District and worked on committees such as construction,
10contract compliance, human relations, and rules and
11administration; he was appointed to take the seat of his mother
12Bobbie Steele after her retirement in 2006; he went on to win
13the election in 2010 and the re-election in 2014; and
14 WHEREAS, Robert Steele was previously a Chicago Park
15district administrator and was heavily involved in
16community-based efforts in his native west side; he was
17president pro tempore of the county board, a forest preserve
18district board member, and chairman of the environmental
19control and contract compliance committees; he also served on
20the boards of Mount Sinai Hospital and the Gift of Hope; he was
21a trustee of Frazier Preparatory Academy and president of the
22National Association of Black County Officials from 2008 to

12010; and
2 WHEREAS, Robert Steele was a lifelong Chicagoan and cared
3deeply about the North Lawndale community; he was a tireless
4advocate for organ donation after receiving a kidney transplant
5from his sister; and
6 WHEREAS, Robert Steele was affectionately called the Man of
7Steele and had the biggest heart for people; he loved working
8in the trenches alongside community organizations, churches,
9schools, at-risk youth, and senior citizens; he developed great
10alliances with these groups by working to bring empowerment
11zones to the City of Chicago and most recently had been focused
12on addressing safety and restorative justice in his service
13areas; he was a devoted public servant and will be deeply
14missed by the communities he served, his family, and his
15children; therefore, be it
16 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Robert Steele, and extend our sincere condolences to his
19family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
20further
21 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the family of Robert Steele as an expression of
