2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Arnold W. "Arnie" Schlegel of Waukegan; | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel was born in Racine, Wisconsin to | ||||||
6 | Lorenz and Meta (Strey) on November 2, 1924; he was baptized | ||||||
7 | and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church and graduated from | ||||||
8 | Horlick High School in Racine in
1942; he served his country in | ||||||
9 | the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 as Staff Sergeant, Company K, | ||||||
10 | 71st Infantry, 44th Division; he received a
Combat Infantry | ||||||
11 | Badge and a European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with | ||||||
12 | one Bronze Star; he married Verna Kump at St. Paul's Lutheran | ||||||
13 | Church in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin in 1951; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel received his Master of Science from | ||||||
15 | the University of
Wisconsin; he taught business education | ||||||
16 | studies and economics for two years in Brooklyn, Wisconsin and | ||||||
17 | in
Lafayette, Indiana; he then served as an educator at | ||||||
18 | Waukegan High School from 1959 to 1992, where he co-created the | ||||||
19 | computer programing curriculum; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel enjoyed traveling through Europe; | ||||||
21 | he played the West Campus
organ for the travelogue pictures for | ||||||
22 | 25 years and was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he |

1 | served as Sunday school teacher, stewardship
chairman, | ||||||
2 | treasurer, and choir member; he rebuilt an old church organ, | ||||||
3 | grew flowers from seeds, and constructed a rock garden and pond | ||||||
4 | for the yard; he
collected replicas of ships, music boxes, and | ||||||
5 | steins; he loved music and could play many instruments in his
| ||||||
6 | early years; he entertained others with German folk songs and | ||||||
7 | puns; he was a devoted husband, father,
and grandfather; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel was preceded in death by his | ||||||
9 | parents and his sons-in-law, Richard Neil and Lawrence
Tessmer; | ||||||
10 | and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel is survived by his wife of 68 | ||||||
12 | years, Verna; his daughters, Kimberly and Laurie; his | ||||||
13 | grandsons, Richard, William
(Kelly), and Gregory (Brandy); his | ||||||
14 | step-great-grandson, Johnaton, and one on the way; and his | ||||||
15 | sister-in-law, Carrie
Viola (Bill); therefore, be it

16 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
17 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
18 | Arnold W. "Arnie" Schlegel and extend our sincere condolences | ||||||
19 | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||
20 | it further
| ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
22 | presented to the family of Arnie Schlegel as an expression of |
