SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
learn of the death of Arnold W. "Arnie" Schlegel of Waukegan;
and
WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel was born in Racine, Wisconsin to
Lorenz and Meta (Strey) on November 2, 1924; he was baptized
and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church and graduated from
Horlick High School in Racine in 1942; he served his country in
the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 as Staff Sergeant, Company K,
71st Infantry, 44th Division; he received a Combat Infantry
Badge and a European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with
one Bronze Star; he married Verna Kump at St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin in 1951; and
WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel received his Master of Science from
the University of Wisconsin; he taught business education
studies and economics for two years in Brooklyn, Wisconsin and
in Lafayette, Indiana; he then served as an educator at
Waukegan High School from 1959 to 1992, where he co-created the
computer programing curriculum; and
WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel enjoyed traveling through Europe;
he played the West Campus organ for the travelogue pictures for
25 years and was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he

served as Sunday school teacher, stewardship chairman,
treasurer, and choir member; he rebuilt an old church organ,
grew flowers from seeds, and constructed a rock garden and pond
for the yard; he collected replicas of ships, music boxes, and
steins; he loved music and could play many instruments in his
early years; he entertained others with German folk songs and
puns; he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; and
WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel was preceded in death by his
parents and his sons-in-law, Richard Neil and Lawrence Tessmer;
and
WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel is survived by his wife of 68
years, Verna; his daughters, Kimberly and Laurie; his
grandsons, Richard, William (Kelly), and Gregory (Brandy); his
step-great-grandson, Johnaton, and one on the way; and his
sister-in-law, Carrie Viola (Bill); therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
Arnold W. "Arnie" Schlegel and extend our sincere condolences
to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of Arnie Schlegel as an expression of
