SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Jeff Lair of Jacksonville, who passed
4away on June 18, 2021; and
5 WHEREAS, Jeff Lair was born in Jacksonville to Harry
6Francis and Marian Lois Summers Lair on January 22, 1951; he
7graduated from Winchester High School; he married Jane Brown,
8and they were later divorced; he married Shari Markillie in
9Laramie, Wyoming on September 6, 2005, and she preceded him in
10death on October 12, 2008; and
11 WHEREAS, Jeff Lair worked as a dispatcher and deputy for
12the Scott County Sheriff's Department; he served as Scott
13County Coroner from 1974 to 1976, while he studied to become a
14paramedic and developed an interest in death investigation; he
15became a paramedic at Passavant Hospital in 1976 and became a
16deputy coroner that same year; he was elected Morgan County
17Coroner in 1984, and he served the county until his retirement
18in 2019; his career at Passavant Hospital spanned 26 years;
19following his retirement, he served as a security guard at
20Memorial Medical Center in Springfield and continued his work
21as owner of Lair Death Investigations, which he founded in
221996; and

1 WHEREAS, Jeff Lair was well-known for his passion as a
2coroner and death investigator; he was board certified by the
3American Board of Medicolegal Investigators and used his
4knowledge in solving several previously unsolved homicides; he
5also founded the Underwater Search and Recovery Team in Morgan
6County and coordinated entomology classes for police
7investigators on his property north of Jacksonville; and
8 WHEREAS, Jeff Lair served as president of Mothers Against
9Drunk Driving; he was an active member of Kiwanis Club of
10Jacksonville; he also enjoyed golfing and riding his
11motorcycle; and
12 WHEREAS, Jeff Lair is survived by his children, Jennifer
13Smith, Derek Lair, and Skyler Lair, and his sisters, Janice
14(Donn) Lobb and Jane (Patrick) McGowan; therefore, be it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Jeff Lair and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
18friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Jeff Lair as an expression of our
21deepest sympathy.
