1		SENATE RESOLUTION
2		WHEREAS, Genetic counselors empower patients and their
3		families with vital healthcare information, guidance and
4		emotional support to help them understand their family
5		history, evaluate genetic testing options, and make informed
6		choices based on test results; and
7		WHEREAS, There are over 150 certified genetic counselors
8		in Illinois working in prenatal, fertility, pediatrics,
9		metabolic, cardiovascular, neurology, and cancer care; there
10		are 5,000 genetic counselors across the country; and
11		WHEREAS, Many people benefit from increased genetic
12		sequencing research and genetic counseling, including anyone
13		with a condition linked to a specific gene or with a family
14		history of an inherited disease or anyone who is considering
15		genetic testing; and
16		WHEREAS, Genetic counselors streamline the healthcare
17		industry by ensuring the right tests are being ordered,
18		avoiding costly and unnecessary costs and tests, helping
19		patients and providers to understand complex test results and
20		how to best use this information, helping consult potential
21		parents on the intimidating potential of passing on inherited
22		diseases, sharing information with family members, and

1		providing recommendations for community support services;
2		therefore, be it
3		RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
4		ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that the Illinois House of
5		Representatives recognizes that the sequencing of the human
6		genome is one of the most significant scientific
7		accomplishments of the past hundred years and expresses
8		support for genetic counselors who are using this research to
9		improve the lives of many throughout the state; and be it
10		further
11		RESOLVED, That we declare November 4, 2021 as Genetic
12		Counselor Awareness Day in the State of Illinois.
