| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the |
| 5 | | Violent Gun Offender Sentencing Act.
|
| 6 | | Section 5. Purpose. The General Assembly recognizes that a |
| 7 | | significant amount of gun violence is committed by individuals |
| 8 | | with prior criminal histories involving violence and firearms. |
| 9 | | This Act creates data-driven presumptive guidelines within |
| 10 | | existing sentencing ranges to target the most serious penalties |
| 11 | | towards offenders who have histories of violence and gun crime, |
| 12 | | while maintaining judicial discretion in the interest of |
| 13 | | justice. The goal of these presumptive guidelines is to provide |
| 14 | | additional guidance to the court, to ensure that sentences for |
| 15 | | repeat, violent gun offenders reflect the seriousness of those |
| 16 | | offenses.
