1 AN ACT concerning criminal law.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the
5Violent Gun Offender Sentencing Act.
6 Section 5. Purpose. The General Assembly recognizes that a
7significant amount of gun violence is committed by individuals
8with prior criminal histories involving violence and firearms.
9This Act creates data-driven presumptive guidelines within
10existing sentencing ranges to target the most serious penalties
11towards offenders who have histories of violence and gun crime,
12while maintaining judicial discretion in the interest of
13justice. The goal of these presumptive guidelines is to provide
14additional guidance to the court, to ensure that sentences for
15repeat, violent gun offenders reflect the seriousness of those
16offenses.
