Bill Title: Amends the Illinois Municipal Code. Authorizes a municipality to opt out of a police district by an affirmative vote of a majority of the members of the municipality's corporate authority. Provides that a municipality that opts out of a police district may later opt in to the district by an affirmative vote of a majority of the members of the corporate authority. Effective immediately.

1 AN ACT concerning local government.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Illinois Municipal Code is amended by
5 changing Section 7-4-7 as follows:
6 (65 ILCS 5/7-4-7) (from Ch. 24, par. 7-4-7)
7 Sec. 7-4-7. Police district.
8 (a) The territory which is embraced within the corporate
9 limits of adjoining municipalities within any county in this
10 State shall be a police district.
11 (b) On or after the effective date of this amendatory Act
12 of the 96th General Assembly, the corporate authorities of a
13 municipality located within a county with a population between
14 39,001 and 39,499, based on the 2000 federal decennial census,
15 may, by an affirmative vote of the majority of its members,
16 dissolve its police district. A municipality that dissolves a
17 police district under this subsection (b) may reconstitute the
18 police district by an affirmative vote of a majority of the
19 members of the corporate authority.

21 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
22 becoming law.
